Tabiya at the Google.org Impact Summit 2024
Our Tabiya team at the Google.org Impact Summit 2024

Last week, the Tabiya team had the incredible opportunity to showcase our AI-powered skills discovery tool, Compass, at the inaugural Google.org Impact Summit in Mountain View, California. We were honored to be among the 21 global nonprofits selected to participate in the first Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI.

Compass: Unlocking Hidden Potential

Compass is an innovative, AI-powered chatbot designed to change the way young people identify, articulate, and showcase their skills. As a personal career assistant, Compass helps youth uncover hidden talents and match them with the best opportunities in the job market.

Using a large language model (LLM) and a conversational interface, Compass engages users in natural dialogue to explore their experiences. It then analyzes this input to identify and categorize skills against localized skill taxonomies, creating a comprehensive skills profile tailored to each user. What sets Compass apart is its ability to recognize skills from both formal and informal work, including those from the often-overlooked "Unseen Economy."

As with all of our work, Compass is designed as a digital public good

  • The core technology is open-source, allowing for transparency and community-driven improvements
  • We aim to build a diverse global community of contributors and implementers around Compass
  • Organizations supporting youth in their career journeys can adapt Compass to their specific needs and contexts

Our Journey with Google.org

The development of Compass was made possible through our participation in the Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI. This intensive 6-month program provided us with invaluable funding, pro bono support, training, and mentorship. We're immensely thankful to the Googlers and partners we've met along the way, including our own fantastic “squad” of Googlers who helped us throughout the program.

At the Summit, Google.org also shared its new strategy, with a fresh focus on knowledge, skills, and learning. We love how Maggie Johnson put it: "access to information lets people thrive: It helps them gain knowledge, find opportunities and discover pathways to a more secure future." This directly aligns with our mission at Tabiya!

We're incredibly grateful for the opportunity and proud to graduate alongside other inspiring social impact organizations. You can learn more about how the other organizations in our cohort are leveraging AI for Social Good in this new eBook from Google Cloud.

The Impact Summit marked a key milestone of our journey with Google.org. At our demo booth, we had the chance to showcase how Compass is using AI to change the way young jobseekers identify, articulate, and showcase their skills. The energy and enthusiasm attendees showed towards Compass was truly inspiring, highlighting Compass's massive potential for impact.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, we're more motivated than ever to launch Compass and make it available to youth around the globe. We will continue to test and refine Compass with our partners over the next weeks and months, and we aim to conduct a rigorous impact evaluation before scaling the tool with our partners. We're excited about upcoming features, including expanded geographic reach, multilingual support, and voice integration.
